Georg Muffat, Apparatus musico-organisticus

Kola Owolabi, organist

The toccatas of Georg Muffat exemplify the late 17th century South German baroque style.  Each toccata features a different character capturing the qualities of its mode, and the pieces contrast bold harmonic progressions with clever imitative counterpoint.  This is the first recording of Muffat’s keyboard works performed on North American organs and is the debut recording of two new instruments by eminent craft organ builders influenced by European baroque organs:  the Italian style Fisk organ, Opus 148 (2018) and Richards, Fowkes & Co, Opus 24 (2021)

Jacques Boyvin: Four Suites from the Second Livre d’Orgue

Kola Owolabi, Organist

For many performers today, mastery of the interpretation of music of the French Classic school can be elusive. Clearly, Owolabi has a deep understanding and penchant for the style, and this music in particular, which he performs with grace, conviction, and communicative insight. He is a worthy ambassador of a body of repertoire that deserves to be more widely recognized for its value in the canon of 17th- and 18th-century French organ music. In addition to the music, this recording beautifully captures the sounds of the meticulously restored organ, which is itself a treasure.

Sacred Expressions: Twentieth Century Music for Organ

Kola Owolabi, Organist

This is a fine opportunity to hear a first-rate recital on a well preserved 1950 Walter Holtkamp organ. Eben’s Four Biblical Dances are played with muscle and drive and extraordinary attention to the composer’s detailed and often frequently changing tempo marks. Calvin Hampton’s Variations on the Old Hundredth are a tour de force of visceral dexterity. Owolabi’s technique is more than a match for the challenge.
